«It is to you young people that we give the witness of Memory, so that you can pass it on to future generations when we are no longer alive. You young people have a duty to be indignant at the injustices of your time ». The words of Piero Terracinae di Grazia di Veroli, tireless witnesses of the Shoah, still echo in our mind, taking us back in time, to the two intense moments that last year we had the honor of living with them. Two precious testimonies that guided our path on Memory during 2019, but that today have an even greater weight for us who have had the good fortune to listen to them: Piero and Grazia unfortunately disappeared recently, leaving a great void in our hearts, but also a great positive energy. You are no longer the same after listening to their testimonies, and the young participants of the last Memory Journey know it well.
Remembrance Day this year therefore has a particular value for us. The recent disappearance of these two Peace ambassadors gives us an even greater responsibility in continuing a journey started many years ago and which has seen the involvement of hundreds of young people in the area to date. «We can’t stop right now. We owe it to Piero, we owe it to Grazia “said the young participants of the last edition of the Journey. Thus, by their will, the initiative” Semi di Memoria “was born, a training course on the themes of the Holocaust and discrimination, conceived and promoted by Caritas Diocesana Agrigento and the Mondoaltro Foundation. The goal is to stimulate young people to reflect on the authentic meaning of a Memory that can not only be a celebration, a commemoration of the atrocities of the Holocaust, but the basis from which to start to build a peaceful future. History teaches us that there is no limit to the horror of human madness; the present reminds us that indifference towards small and large daily discrimination risks reviving the dark periods of the past. Because as Senator Liliana Segre reminds us: «everything starts with that word: Indifference. The horrors of yesterday, today and tomorrow bloom in the shadow of that word ».
This pushes us to reconfirm our commitment to keep the witness of Memory, to deliver it intact to the younger generations, who will have the responsibility to pass it on. “Semi di Memoria” is a formative itinerary in stages; the first stage, in January, will see us present in the high schools of the province for training meetings and restitution of the 2019 Travel experience. It will be our way of living the Day of Remembrance 2020, through training events that will bring us directly in the places where the boys train every day. But the central moment of the itinerary will be the new edition of the Journey of Memory, which will take place from 18 to 22 May 2020, an experience that will take us to the places of the Shoah (Milan, Krakow, Auschwitz-Birkenau), on the 75th anniversary of the liberation of extermination camps. Recipients of the initiative are young people from the province of Agrigento, aged between 18 and 30, who will be selected in February 2020, and who will also have the opportunity to take part in a short pre-departure training course. The Journey of Memory is a unique experience, a journey with an extraordinary human, cultural and educational value, but also a very intimate experience that can touch the deepest strings of the soul.
Here is the announcement to apply for the 2020 edition of the Journey of Memory.
